Premiering in 1977, Baggy Pants and the Nitwits was a unique split-style cartoon from DePatie–Freleng Enterprises, the same studio behind The Pink Panther. The show brought together two very different comedic worlds under one title.
The Baggy Pants segments paid tribute to silent film legends like Charlie Chaplin. The main character, Baggy Pants — a skinny, mustached little fellow in oversized trousers — communicated entirely through slapstick, mime, and visual gags, turning everyday situations into gentle comedic gems.
Meanwhile, The Nitwits portion ramped up the absurdity. Retired superhero Tyrone, voiced by the legendary Arte Johnson, and his equally eccentric wife Gladys tackled crime and chaos with more enthusiasm than skill, resulting in deliriously silly outcomes every time.
The contrast worked: calm, classic comedy followed by joyful nonsense. It was vintage humor wrapped in ’70s flair — strange, charming, and playfully unforgettable.
